Cryptocurrency scammers are targeting the phantom wallet users through malicious pop-ups that look like real updated requests.
According to the web 3 security firm Scam sniferFishing scammers are using a new strategy to draw fanatum wallets in signing fake “update extensions” requests to users. Once approved, the pop-up inspires them to enter their seed phrase, which if provided, gives the scammers full access to their funds.
Scam Snifer advised users to never disclose their seed phrases and update the extension only through the web stores available on Chrome browser.
Previously, there were such popups Limited Malibly websites to mimic the interface of the phantom. Now, scammers are connecting to the real phantom wallet, making their attacks even more confident.
One way to spot these fake pop-ups is to check how the window behaves. The real phantom wallet acts like a pop-up system window that can be minimized, maximum and shaped. Fake, however, are trapped inside the browser tab.
Another trick is to try to right-click the link, as the phishing pages usually disable this function to prevent users from inspecting the URL, while the real phantom pop-ups will not ban it.
Users should also check the URL as the actual Phantom extension pop-up will display a chrome extension: // prefix, which the fishing websites cannot fake.
Phantom users have recently faced more than only fish hazards. Recently an iOS update introduced an important bug that resets the wallet and closes users, forcing them to re -enter their recovery phrases. While the issue was later packed, some users who had lost access to their funds expressed concern over the risks of unexpected disruption in non-Castodial purse.
Launched as a wallet on Solana in 2021, Phantom has expanded to other chains such as the Etharium layer 2 base and layer 1 network needle in the previous months.
