Hester Peirs writes: ‘The journey begins’

US Securities and Exchange Commissioner Haster Peerus published a new paper on 4 February, outlining the main objectives for the agency’s newly created Crypto Task Force.

In paper, titled the journey beginsPeerus admits that SEC has struggled to define its approach to cryptocurrency. In the last decade, regulator uncertainty, incompatible policies and legal ambiguity have shaped the crypto landscape.

However, she looks at the launch of the Crypto Task Force, which she leads, as an opportunity to move forward with a structure, which balances innovation and investor protection.

“It took us a long time to get into this mess, and it is going to take us some time to get out of it. The Commission has attached one or the second decade to one or the second decade with the Crypto industry, “she wrote.

Major objectives of task force

Peerce is advocating a more structured approach and underlined several major objectives:

  • Clarify the security situation of crypto assets
  • Providing temporary relief for tokeeers
  • Viable registration route
  • Broker-dealers updates
  • Addressing the custody rules for investment advisors
  • Crypto borrowing and defines rules for stacking
  • Crypto exchange-traded products improve
  • Tokens to increase clearing and disposal for securities
  • Encourage international cooperation
  • Identification of areas outside the jurisdiction of SEC

While Peerce admits that the further road will be challenging, it remains optimistic that cooperation can lead to more predetermined and innovative -friendly regulatory environment.

“If we cooperate, the journey will be life -threatening and rewarding. This is the beginning of the conversation – one we don’t want us to be with ourselves, ”he concluded.
