Law enforcement in Phuket has arrested four hackers suspected of orchestrating ransomware attacks on Swiss firms and stealing millions in Cryptocurrency.
The accused, all Russian citizens, allegedly deployed ransomware on network of 17 Swiss companies between April 2023 and October 2024, 10 February. Report Rashtra Thailand said from the local media outlet.
For those unknown people, ransomware attacks include locking the hackers a victim’s data and demanding a payment – usually in the crypto – to restore access. In this case, hackers reportedly used Phobos Malware, the report states.
Was accused Allegedly The Russian ransomware Group was also responsible for stealing bitcoins of about 16 million dollars from Group 8Base and about 1,000 victims worldwide.
According to the Cybercrime Investigation Bureau Commissioner Poll Lieutenant General Trearong Fiafan, the suspects were desired by both the US and Swiss officials.
The Thai police, in coordination with immigration officers, tracked them to Fuket and seized more than 40 evidence, including laptops, smartphones and digital wallets. Switzerland has already requested its extradition to face allegations.
Meanwhile, Fuket has become the center of many cryptocurrency-related crimes in the last months.
Last month, a Russian man was assaulted and robbed with $ 20,000 at a hotel in Karon, Fuket, in which authorities described as a crypto-related dispute. According to reports, the victim was encountered by two Russian colleagues on an unresolved cryptocurrency loan associated with former business behavior in Russia.
In November 2024, a Ukrainian National in Fuket was forced to move a tether of $ 250,000 while meeting friends. Local reports stated that the victim was tied with cables and forced to transact before the attackers escaped.
